Calculating the Ricardian-Rent of Your Product:
If your product can save 250 million Americans $1.00 each, that's $250
million in Ricardian-Rent. Your product's Ricardian-Rent is the unique benefit your product provides, minus the cost of your product.
It's not a new
idea. You can split
this money with your customers or clients - if they agree that you are uniquely
and legally positioned to provide this value. Many years ago, a gentleman named Pythagoras discovered that the square of the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle, equals the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides. At that time, everybody knew that if a right triangle had sides with lengths of 3 units and 4 units, the hypotenuse would be 5 units. The theorem that Pythagoras came up with applied to all right triangles. The Pythagorean theorem has helped more people than we can imagine. This theorem's Ricardian-Rent was massive. But Pythagoras died a poor man. No one can control information of this nature. If you have an idea like Pythagoras, we suggest that you write it up in an academic journal or post it on the Internet. Give it away because you'll never make any money from a product you cannot control irregardless of the size of its Ricardian-Rent. Here are some ways you can attempt to control your product: 1.) Trade secrets, 2.) Copyright, 3.) Trademarks, 4.) Patents, 5.) Domain name, and 6.) Illegal methods. Of course we don't recommend controlling your product through illegal means (or doing anything illegal). That kind of thing never works out in the long run. But it is important to note that your competitors may use illegal means to control their products. And always remember that when all is said and done, control is always just an illusion.
